ASME B31.3 is the most commonly referenced piping code in the process industries. It governs the design, materials, fabrication, assembly, erection, examination, inspection, and testing of piping systems in petroleum refineries, chemical plants, pharmaceutical manufacturing, semiconductor fabrication, and other process facilities. If your project involves process fluids, corrosive chemicals, or hazardous materials, B31.3 is almost certainly the applicable code.
One of B31.3’s unique features is its classification of piping into fluid service categories, each with different examination and testing requirements:
B31.3 Table 341.3.2 defines the examination requirements for each fluid service category. The extent of radiographic or ultrasonic examination varies based on the fluid category, material, wall thickness, and joint type. Understanding these requirements at the fabrication stage — not after the pipe is welded — is essential for planning examination hold points, NDE logistics, and project scheduling.
B31.3 covers an extensive range of materials, including the exotic alloys commonly found in chemical processing — Inconel, Hastelloy, Monel, titanium, duplex stainless, and others. The code specifies allowable stresses at temperature for each material, along with specific fabrication requirements such as preheat, interpass temperature limits, post-weld heat treatment, and hardness testing.
Process piping fabrication under B31.3 requires attention to material traceability, weld documentation, NDE scheduling, and dimensional control. Every weld needs to be traceable to a qualified procedure and a qualified welder. Material certificates must follow each component through fabrication. And the examination program must be planned from the start to avoid costly rework.
