ASME BPVC Section VIII — Pressure Vessel Code
ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII establishes the rules for designing, fabricating, inspecting, testing, and certifying pressure vessels. Divisions of Section VIII
- Division 1 — The most commonly used division, covering pressure vessels with design pressures generally up to 3,000 psi. Prescriptive rules for design, materials, fabrication, and inspection. Most process vessels, storage tanks, and heat exchangers in industrial facilities are built to Division 1.
- Division 2 — Alternative rules that allow higher allowable stresses in exchange for more detailed stress analysis and more stringent fabrication, examination, and testing requirements. Used when weight or material cost reduction justifies the additional engineering effort.
- Division 3 — Covers high-pressure vessels above 10,000 psi. Specialized applications in chemical processing, oil and gas, and research.
The U Stamp and What It Means
Manufacturers authorized to build ASME Section VIII Division 1 pressure vessels hold a “U” stamp from ASME. This authorization requires a documented quality system, qualified personnel, and periodic audits by ASME. An Authorized Inspector (AI) must review and approve the manufacturer’s work at defined hold points during fabrication. The U stamp on a vessel nameplate tells your client and their insurance company that the vessel was built under a quality system that meets ASME requirements.

- Vessel nozzle connections — Piping connects to vessel nozzles, and the welding, examination, and load considerations at that interface must satisfy both the vessel code and the piping code

- Material compatibility — Vessel materials and piping materials must be compatible at the connection point, with appropriate transition pieces and welding procedures
