ISO 9001 — Quality Management System
ISO 9001 is the internationally recognized standard for quality management systems. While ASME and AWS codes define what constitutes acceptable welding and fabrication quality, ISO 9001 defines how an organization manages its processes to consistently achieve that quality. It covers everything from document control and purchasing to nonconformance management and continuous improvement — the management infrastructure that makes consistent quality possible.

ISO 9001 is built on seven quality management principles that guide how the system operates:

What It Means in Practice
For a piping fabrication shop, ISO 9001 translates into concrete operational practices:
- Document control — Drawings, procedures, and specifications are controlled to ensure everyone works from the current revision. Obsolete documents are removed from use.
- Purchasing controls — Materials are procured from approved suppliers with proper certifications. Incoming material is verified against purchase orders and material test reports.
- Process control — Fabrication processes follow documented procedures with defined inspection hold points. Work does not proceed past a hold point without required inspections.
- Nonconformance management — When something does not meet requirements, it is identified, segregated, documented, and dispositioned through a formal process. Root causes are investigated and corrective actions implemented to prevent recurrence.
- Calibration — Measuring and testing equipment is calibrated at defined intervals with records maintained. This ensures dimensional inspections, pressure tests, and NDE results are reliable.
- Training and competence — Personnel are qualified for their roles, with training records maintained. Welders are qualified per Section IX, inspectors are certified, and fabricators are trained on applicable procedures.
- Internal audits — The quality system is regularly audited to verify it is being followed and to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Management review — Senior management periodically reviews quality performance, customer feedback, audit results, and improvement opportunities.
