AWS D1.1 — Structural Welding Code — Steel

While ASME codes govern pressure-containing piping, the structural steel that supports it falls under AWS D1.1. Pipe supports, equipment frames, skid bases, structural attachments, and platform steel all require welding that meets the AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code. What AWS D1.1 Covers

AWS D1.1 applies to welded steel structures using carbon and low-alloy steels. In a piping fabrication context, this typically includes:

  • Pipe support steel — Beam clamps, shoe supports, trunnions, spring can bases, and guide assemblies
  • Skid bases and frames — Structural steel frameworks for modular skid assemblies
  • Equipment support steel — Pump bases, vessel saddles, and exchanger support frames
  • Platform and access steel — Grating supports, handrail posts, and ladder clips
  • Structural attachments — Lugs, brackets, and clips welded to structural members

Prequalified vs. Qualified Procedures

AWS D1.1 offers two paths for welding procedure qualification. Prequalified WPSs use specific joint configurations, welding processes, and parameters defined in the code — if you follow the rules exactly, no testing is required. Qualified WPSs require testing similar to ASME Section IX when the joint design or parameters fall outside prequalified limits. Understanding which path applies saves time and cost during project planning.

Weld Quality and Inspection

D1.1 defines acceptance criteria for visual inspection, radiographic testing, ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle testing, and other examination methods. The code also specifies inspector qualifications — structural welding inspectors should be AWS Certified Welding Inspectors (CWI) or equivalent. Weld quality requirements vary based on whether the connection is statically loaded or cyclically loaded, with more stringent criteria for fatigue-sensitive joints.

Complete Joint Penetration vs. Partial Joint Penetration

Structural connections may require complete joint penetration (CJP) welds or partial joint penetration (PJP) welds depending on the loading and design requirements. CJP welds require full fusion through the joint thickness and typically need backgouging or backing. PJP welds are designed for specific effective throat dimensions. The welding procedure and fit-up requirements differ for each type, and getting this right during fabrication prevents costly field corrections.
