ASME BPE — Bioprocessing Equipment Standard

Certified precision: meeting rigorous safety and engineering codes.

ASME BPE — Bioprocessing Equipment Standard

ASME BPE (Bioprocessing Equipment) is the standard that governs the design, materials, fabrication, and inspection of hygienic piping and equipment for pharmaceutical manufacturing, biotechnology, food and beverage processing, and other industries where product purity is critical. When contamination is not just a quality issue but a regulatory and safety concern, BPE compliance provides the framework for building piping systems that meet the most demanding cleanliness requirements.

What BPE Covers

BPE goes well beyond standard piping codes by addressing factors unique to hygienic applications:

  • Surface finish requirements — Internal surface roughness measured in Ra (roughness average) microinches. Mechanically polished surfaces typically achieve 20-30 Ra, while electropolished surfaces reach 15-25 Ra or better. Smoother surfaces resist bacterial adhesion and are easier to clean.
  • Material specifications — 316L stainless steel is the standard for product-contact surfaces, with specific requirements for chemical composition, mill finish, and traceability. Higher alloys like AL-6XN or Hastelloy are used for corrosive process streams.
  • Weld quality — BPE defines specific acceptance criteria for welds, including ID bead profile, discoloration limits, and concavity/convexity allowances. Internal weld surfaces must be free of crevices, pits, or irregularities that could harbor bacteria.
  • Drainability — Piping systems must be designed and installed with proper slope to ensure complete drainage. Pooling of process fluid or cleaning solution in dead legs or low points is not acceptable.
  • Component design — Valves, fittings, instruments, and connections must meet hygienic design principles — no dead legs, proper radius-to-diameter ratios, and appropriate surface finishes on all product-contact surfaces.

Orbital Welding

BPE systems typically require orbital GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) for tube-to-fitting welds. Orbital welding uses automated equipment that rotates the welding torch around a stationary tube joint, producing consistent, repeatable welds with controlled heat input. Each weld is documented with parameters (current, travel speed, arc voltage, gas flow) and visually inspected or borescoped to verify internal bead quality. This documentation becomes part of the validation package that pharmaceutical quality teams require.

Documentation and Traceability

BPE projects require comprehensive documentation that standard piping projects do not:

  • Weld logs linking each weld to its coupon number, welder, procedure, and inspection results
  • Borescope photographs of internal weld beads
  • Material certificates with full traceability from mill to installed location
  • Surface finish measurement records
  • Passivation or electropolishing certifications

Supporting Pharmaceutical and Biotech Projects

Synergy Piping brings BPE fabrication capabilities to contractors serving the pharmaceutical, biotech, and food processing industries. Our orbital welding equipment, surface finish capabilities, and documentation practices support the quality requirements these facilities demand. When your project requires BPE-compliant piping, we deliver fabrications that pass your client’s validation review.

Consulting Services

Now offering prefabrication consulting.

Prefabrication is more than a cost savings — done right, it compresses your schedule, improves quality, and reduces field labor. But knowing where to draw the line between shop and field work is where experience matters.

We help contractors across Iowa and the United States develop prefabrication strategies that actually move the needle. From our facility in Walford, we provide scope identification, constructability reviews, material optimization, and logistics planning — offering practical guidance for projects nationally from people who have done the work, not just drawn the plan.
